Local columnist and Eastern New Mexico University Media Relations Director Wendel Sloan won first place in New Mexico in a national competition for his opinion columns.
The National Federation of Press Women recognized Sloan for his columns in the Portales News-Tribune and the Clovis News Journal on Sundays.
Two of his columns will advance to the next stage of the national competition at the National Federation of Press Women Conven-tion in Scottsdale, Ariz., between Sept. 20-22.
One column was about how the birther issue about President Barack Obama's citizenship should join Osama bin Laden on the ocean floor, and the other about alcoholism not being a moral failing as insinuated by a postcard sent out by a local church opposing Sunday alcohol sales at Portales restaurants.
