Club notes - April 29

Daughters of the American Revolution

The El Portal chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met in Sandra Hays home April 14. The program was presented by Dick Sullinger, who joined the Navy at age 17 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served on the USS San Diego, the first victorious American warship to enter Tokyo Bay. Mr. Sullinger and wife, Mary, made a DVD about the ship and men who served on it. Very interesting program about an important time in American history.

Regent Pam Wallace reported on the conference in Albuquerque. El Portal chapter received seven awards on the Heritage Room and first place for our scrapbook. Certificates were awarded to Vicky Stratton for genealogy and Jessie Strauch for VIS. We are very proud of CAR member Katelyn Hawkins, who sold $240 worth of flip-flops she decorated. She donated the money to the State Regent's project.

Members present were Wenonah Hunton, Karolyn Sailer, Nancy Bauder, Cori Snobble, Vicky Stratton, Pam Wallace, Carolyn Thompson, Sandy Hays and Jessie Strauch.

Altrusa International of Portales

The Altrusa International, Inc. Club of Portales met April 23 at the Central Annex. President Gaynelle Thomas called the meeting to order. There were 24 members and one guest present.

Cathy Rankin gave the Altrusa Accent on the Collect. Debra Peacock drew for the Queen of Hearts.

Thomas presented a check for $500 to Kathy Shafer, treasurer of the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico for its backpack program.

Judy Piepkorn, service chair, asked members to vote on community projects to support. The club voted to bring canned protein items and dried beans for the Community Services food bank on April 30. Members are to bring flip flops for the Children in Africa project.

Nellie Dyer, vice president, announced the next club meeting for April 30 at Marnee Stratton's home. Secret pals will be revealed. The board will meet at Thomas' house on May 7.

Linda Leaming introduced Linda Davis, who told about their church's youth group's mission trip to Palolo Valley in Hawaii.

United Daughters of the Confederacy

The Ellen W. Jones Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy met on April 7 at Vicky Stratton's home.

The Treasurers report was sent by Nena Stratton. General Fund, $2437.23. Scholarship fund, $783.07.

Vicky presented new members Della and Nancy Bauder with certificates of membership.

Jan installed next years new officers.

The We Can project is for Hartley House this month. We collected $120 for them. Michael works with a program that we will consider next year.

The next meeting will be the Memorial Day meeting in May.

For the program Vicky showed a video of the history of our State Flag. The first flag was blue with the U.S. Flag on it and the State symbol. A prize of $25.00 was offered for a new flag design. A doctor in Santa Fe designed the flag on an orange background and Zia Sun symbol. The four rays represent North, South, East and West. The new flag was adopted in 1925.

United Daughters of the Confederacy

The Ellen W. Jones Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy met in Clovis on Feb. 7.

Peg Kline read a thank you card from Mary Jon McKenzie for carnations UDC gave for Juanita Johnson and a card from the Florida division presenting Mrs. Roy E. Likins for president general.

Janelle reported a dedication 2 p.m. on July 18, 2012 in Tucumcari. She has invited all SCV's and Nora Mitchell Chapter of UDC from Albuquerque.

An April Installation motion was made by Della, seconded by Peg.

The program was brought by Foster and Ross. Foster honored General Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson at Stone Mountain: World's Largest Bas-Relief Sculpture.

Ross discussed the lives of Franklin Buchanan, Matthew F. Maury, and Raphael Semmes. She stated the Ellen W. Jones Chapter started January 6, 1906, and is 106 years old.

Working 9-5 Club

The Working 9-5 Club hosted the RCEA Culture Arts Show and Luncheon on March 31, which was held at the McAlister Room in the Jake Lopez Building.

The 37 members attending viewed 197 culture arts made by county extension members.

Don (Doc) Elder presented a program on the history of New Mexico becoming a state and its 100th birthday.

Home economist Connie Moyers announced Jimmie Nunnally from the Causey Extension Club as Roosevelt County Pioneer Woman for 2012. Heart of EANM for 2012 is Marilyn Gardner from Causey Extension Club. They will be entered in the state contest.

Eighty-six members won first place in culture arts, 50 won second and 29 won third. Best of lot had 22 winners. Linda Custer took home "Best of Show" (finally) with her hand appliqué quilt.

Council president Lou Sikes conducted a short business meeting. District meeting will be April 26 and 27 at Ruidoso.

Roosevelt General Hospital Auxiliary

The Roosevelt General Hospital Auxiliary executive board meeting president Linda Uttaro opened the April 14 executive committee meeting of the RGHA with the auxiliary prayer.

A correction to the minutes was stated that the appointment of the three board members appointed at the last meeting were in addition to the ones already serving. Sid Phillips, subbing for Peggy Jones, reported the outstanding bills have been paid. Liaison Amber Hamilton stated that the signage has not come in to date. Dr. Joyce Ann Roberts is not leaving the staff of RGH as an agreement has been worked out with her work load.

Heartland extended invitations to the auxiliary members to a brunch in appreciation for the volunteer work given by the Red Coats and Ladies of the Auxiliary. The ENMU scholarship for 2012-2013 was awarded to Reavis Best. His grandmother Dean Perry, an auxiliary member, will present the award to him at the ENMU awards ceremony.

Bethel Extension Club

The Bethel Extension Club met April 10 in the McAlister Room with eight members in attendance.

Ideas presented by the Fair Booth Committee, Christine Neal and Claryce Richardson, for the fair on Aug. 20-25 were discussed and accepted. Work was started on the projects. While working, the ladies decided to carry some ideas over into hosting the county extension Christmas party on Dec. 3.

All members attending enjoyed pizza and desert while visiting.

The next meeting will be 9 a.m. on May 8 in the McAlister Room. Please, bring sewing machines and materials to work on.

Clovis BPO Does

Clovis BPO Does held a meeting on April 12. The Drove past presidents were honored. Those in attendance were Helen Drake, Mae Pruey, Jean Hayes, JoAnn Thomas, Pat Lovelace, Diana Robinson, Rosalie Crowley, Linda Catanzaro, Kristy Marney, Bonnie Bryant, Betsy Jones, Kaye Parrish, Gwen Rundell-Williams, and Terri Rhue. Current president Sandie Kitchens thanked all of these ladies for their years of service and hard work for the Drove. Refreshments were served after the meeting.

Supreme conductor Kristy Marney was certified by the Drove to compete for supreme junior counselor at the June 2012 Grand Lodge Meeting in Reno, Nev.

The next meeting will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the Elks Lodge.
