Texans complete sweep of Hounds

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team wasn’t able to salvage the finale of their opening Lone Star Conference series on Sunday.

Tarleton State had double-figure hits for the fourth consecutive game and the Texans rode an eight-run sixth to a 13-6 victory over ENMU at Greyhound Field.

Third baseman Ethan Stuckly and second baseman Ryan Small led a 14-hit attack with four hits apiece for the Texans (11-6, 4-0 LSC). Stuckly, whose leadoff double in the fourth was the game’s only extra-base hit, and catcher Jonathan Sanchez each drove in four runs.

The Texans finished the four-game series with 64 hits and outscored the Greyhounds 53-16.

TSU, which got complete-game pitching efforts in each of the first three contests, used six hurlers on Sunday. Tanner Ross (2-0), who worked the fourth inning, got the win.

Leading 3-1, put together five consecutive singles with one out in the sixth. Andrew Wolfe and Evan Robinson each had two-run singles in the inning.

The Greyhounds (9-11, 0-4) avoided the 10-run rule after seven, scoring three times in the sixth, getting run-scoring singles from Sam Hedrick, Luis Quinones and Joe Huwer to pull to 11-4.

ENMU had 13 hits, plus seven walks and a hit batsman, but the Hounds stranded 15 baserunners.

Huwer went 4-for-6 with a pair of RBIs, while Derek Crenshaw and Hedrick each added two hits.

Starter Gabriel Hemmer (1-2) pitched reasonably well before TSU’s sixth-inning explosion.

The Hounds are back in action with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday at New Mexico Highlands.
