WICHITA FALLS, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University softball team got its Lone Star Conference schedule off on the right foot on Friday, beating Midwestern State 6-3 in the opener of a three-game series.

Freshman Amy Smith (3-4) worked six innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs, before freshman Katie Ramsay tossed a perfect seventh for her first save.

ENMU (5-10) pounded out 12 hits — all singles — off freshman left-hander Lindsi Glenn (9-8) and took advantage of three Mustangs errors to plate four unearned runs. Center fielder Savannah Chavez, Ramsay, Smith and right fielder Josette Aguirre each had two hits for the Zias.

Four of MSU’s hits went for extra bases, with right fielder Courtney Bingham and first baseman Christina Roosmalen each going 2-for-3 with a double. The Zias ended a five-game losing streak while handing the Mustangs (10-10, 0-1 LSC) their fourth consecutive loss.

With the game tied 2-2, the Zias plated three runs in the sixth with the help of two MSU errors. Chavez had an RBI single in the inning.

MSU pulled to 5-3 in the bottom half on Nicki Duff’s leadoff triple and a one-out RBI double by Roosmalen. The Zias then used four singles to tack on an insurance run in the seventh, with freshman Lizzy Vasquez driving in pinch-runner Ke VonSchriltz with base hit to left field.

The teams play an 11 a.m. (MST) twin bill today to wrap up the series.
