Hounds top Mustangs in 11 innings

HOBBS — Senior first baseman Joe Huwer delivered a two-out, run-scoring single in the top of the 11th inning Friday to give Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team a 6-5 win over University of the Southwest on the first day of the USW round-robin.

The Greyhounds (3-1) pulled into a tie with a four-run eighth featuring a two-run single from junior Peter Creamer and a game-tying RBI single from junior Derek Crenshaw.

Mustangs pitcher Alfonso Alonzo retired the first two ENMU hitters in the 11th before junior center fielder Brooke Brooks bunted his way on, stole second and scored on the single by Huwer, who finished 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs.

Sophomore Brett Humphries got the win, giving up two runs over the final four innings while striking out three. Crenshaw and junior Sam Hedrick each collected a pair of hits for the Hounds.

ENMU is slated to take on New Mexico Highlands in a 2 p.m. game today, then will play both teams again on Sunday to finish the event.
