Brumfield running for re-election

Gayla Brumfield announced her intention to run for re-election as Clovis mayor.

Brumfield, 58, is the owner and a broker for Coldwell Banker Colonial Real Estate of Clovis. She plans a further announcement Tuesday afternoon.

“Four years ago when I ran, I had a five-point platform,” Brumfield said. “We’ve worked hard to check off most of that. It’s been a busy four years, it’s been a great four years.”

If re-elected, Brumfield said she would not seek a third term.

Brumfield notes her term included numerous infrastructure upgrades, authorization of the Ute Water Project and the replacement of the Hull Street Overpass, a YMCA and a partnership to move the Hotel Clovis to a private builder.

Former Clovis Mayor David Lansford is the only other resident to announce their candidacy for the mayor’s seat. Lansford and Brumfield are the only ones who have held the elected position. Prior to 1996, mayors were elected from within the Clovis city commission by commissioners.

After Lansford announced he would not seek a fourth term due to personal reasons, Brumfield came out on top of a six-candidate field to replace him.

Brumfield has also served on the Clovis Community College Board of Regents.

The filing date is January 10.

The March 6 election includes the mayor’s race, four commission races, and a ballot question to change the city charter to bar dual service on the Clovis City and Curry County commissions.
