Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Business seminars being offered

About four years ago, staff at Clovis Community College’s Small Business Development Center took appointments to talk about business startups.

“It would be two or three weeks before people could get an appointment with us,” Director Sandra Taylor-Sawyer said. “They just needed the basic information. We found we were meeting with people and repeating the same thing.”

Since then, the center turned those meetings into a monthly affair called the “Pre-Venture Seminar.” Today marks the December run of the program, a two-hour seminar on basics to starting a business.

“Basically, the pre-venture seminar is a way to connect with those who have never run a business or have very little experience,” Taylor-Sawyer said. “We provide them a general overview of what they need to do to get started.

“It’s really a launching off pad to the next step. The next step would be for them to take all of the knowledge they’ve learned and put it down on paper.”

Once they have the information, Taylor-Sawyer said, some people may decide it’s not in their best interest to start a business. It’s an unfortunate conclusion, she said, but it’s a better alternative than reaching the same conclusion after dedicating time and money to the business.

The center serves Curry, Roosevelt and De Baca counties. It is one of 20 Small Business Development Centers in the state and one of more than 900 nationwide.

Up to 10 people are accepted for each seminar, with a reservation deadline one day prior.
