EL PASO — Senior forward Curtis Wilkinson posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Eastern New Mexico University upended Texas-El Paso 75-64 in an exhibition game on Thursday night at the Don Haskins Center.
Wilkinson shot 8-of-12 from the floor and led four Greyhounds in double figures as ENMU rebounded from a 51-point exhibition loss the night before at New Mexico State.
Senior guard Stefan Mirabal added 16 points while senior guard Tralyn Harden and junior forward Maurice McGee chipped in 14 points apiece, the latter off the bench. Mirabal and Harden both went 4-of-8 from 3-point range.
The Miners, with a relatively young squad, got 13 points and 11 caroms from freshman Cedrick Lange off the bench, while guard Michael Perez scored 11 points.
ENMU converted 9-of-18 shots from 3-point range and outrebounded UTEP 43-34, one night after they shot just over 30 percent from the field and were crushed on the glass 62-23 at NMSU.
Trailing 16-12 with 12 minutes left, Mirabal’s 3-pointer put the Hounds in front for good and a 21-5 run which helped ENMU open a 40-32 halftime lead.
The Hounds started the second half on an 18-4 charge to open a 58-36 lead. UTEP got as close at 63-52 with 9:27 to go, but never got any closer.
ENMU shot 50 percent in the first half and finished at 46 percent for the game (26-of-57). Mirabal also had six of the team’s 19 assists.
The Hounds open the 2011-12 regular season a week from today with a 4 p.m. (MST) tipoff against Pittsburg State at Stephenville, Texas, as part of a four-team classic hosted by Tarleton State.
