Hounds win MSU meet; Zias fifth

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Senior Casey Robertson led five Eastern New Mexico University men in the top nine, finishing fourth in 34 minutes, 55.8 seconds over 10 kilometers on Saturday as the Greyhounds stormed to the team title in Midwestern State’s Cross Country Carinval.

ENMU finished with 33 points to easily outdistance second-place Abilene Christian, with 68.

Sophomore Trevor Merhage was fifth in 35:03.8 while sophomores Justin Netcher of Clovis (35:17.9), Zerrick Virseno (35.28.7) and Patrick Lueras (35:32.1) finished seventh through ninth. Rounding out ENMU places were freshman Irwin Vera, 16th in 36.26.6, and junior Pedro Martinez, 23rd in 37:10.7.

In the women’s 6K event, ENMU placed fifth in team standings at 124, with Midwestern State winning easily at 32 to 90 for runnerup Dallas Baptist.

Freshman Beth Blind led the balanced Zias, finishing 20th at 24:07.7, while junior Alesha Jones was 21st at 24:16.1. Other ENMU finishes were Brittany Buchanan, 25th in 24:40.0; senior Megan Bryant, 31st in 24:52.6; junior Leigh Ann Omarkhail, 32nd in 24:57.9, and freshman Sofie Ingram, 34th in 25:04.8.
