Hounds suffer first loss

Freedom New Mexico

Juan Peralta knocked in a header off a corner kick in the second overtime Friday to lift Northeastern State past ENMU’s men 2-1 in a battle of unbeaten teams.

The RiverHawks (5-0-1), former members of the Southwest Soccer Conference and Lone Star Conference with ENMU before moving on to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association this year, handed the Greyhounds (4-1-1) their first loss and also became the first team in six matches to score more than one goal against ENMU.

The Hounds struck in the ninth minute when sophomore midfielder Andy Wilkinson scored on a pass from freshman midfielder Anthony Bardon, his second goal of the season.

The RiverHawks pulled even with about 10 minutes gone in the second half when Josue Garcia scored unassisted, dribbling through the right side of the ENMU box to beat freshman goalkeeper Matt Malak.

No. 8 ACU beats Zias — Abilene Christian scored twice in the final eight minutes and the eighth-ranked Wildcats pulled away for a 3-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico University in Lone Star Conference women’s soccer on Friday at the ENMU pitch.

ACU (6-0-1, 2-0-1 LSC) broke through early in the second half when Andrea Carpenter converted her fifth goal of the season on a cross pass from the left side from Jacey Ferrara.

It stayed that way until Megan Turner took a cross pass from Ashley Craig and beat ENMU goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas to the right side of the net for her first goal of the season with just over 7 1/2 minutes remaining.

Ashley Holton added her second goal of the year on a shot from the top of the box with just under five minutes left.

The Wildcats outshot ENMU 21-6 overall, including 11-1 in shots on goal.
