Zias top Wayland in second OT

PORTALES — Junior defender Emily Simon scored on a penalty kick early in the second overtime and the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to five games Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Wayland Baptist at the ENMU pitch.

Simon, who transferred from the University of New Mexico last year and sat out the season with an injury after starting four matches for the Lobos as a freshman in 2007, scored her second goal of the season with just over 1 1/2 minutes gone in the second OT after a foul was called on Wayland.

The Zias (4-2-1), who extended their winning streak over Wayland to six, outplayed the Pioneers (5-2) for the most part, outshooting them 16-4 overall and 7-1 on goal. Senior Sierra Cardenas played the first half in goal for the Zias before being relieved by freshman Kellie Hogan, who was credited with the win.

The Zias will be at home this weekend for Lone Star Conference matches against Abilene Christian on Friday and Midwestern State on Sunday, both set to begin at 2 p.m.
