Experts predict more heat

If you thought Friday got hot, hold on. There’s more on the way, according to the National Weather Service.

Clovis Municipal Airport reported a high temperature of 106 degrees on Friday.

The last time the city got near that high was June 24, 1980, when the thermometer hit 104 degrees.

Weather service forecasters in Albuquerque said there is little relief from high temperatures coming over the next week.

Temperatures will range between 104 and 109 Saturday and 102 and 107 on Sunday.

Next week will bring highs in the upper 90s, which will be five to 10 degrees above average for the end of June, Meteorologist Annette Mokry said.

Mokry said there is almost zero chance of moisture for the next week. Around the middle of the week, mid-level moisture could move into New Mexico, which could trigger dry showers, thunderstorms and dry lightning, Mokry said.

The New Mexico Department of Health is urging residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses by:

• Find a cool area in your area or in your home

• Drink plenty of water or other cool beverages; avoid sugary or carbonated drinks and drinks that contain alcohol

• Take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath with cool water

• Wear light, loose fitting clothing such as cotton

• Monitor your physical condition and that of your family for signs or symptoms of heat illness

• If possible, remain indoors during the hottest time of day.

The warning signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting and fainting, according to a news release from the health department.
