Police blotter — May 11

Samplings of recent calls to Portales law enforcement, according to police records:

Sunday

• Officers were sent to the 1200 block of North Abilene Street about 2:45 a.m. in reference to a residential burglary that occurred in the 700 block of South Avenue B.

One officer met with a man and a woman, residents of the burglarized house, in the alley.

A second officer spoke with the resident of the Abilene house, who said her son came to her home upset and she wasn’t sure why. The first officer joined them and said her son, whom he spoke with in the alley, found his $828 television missing and believed his brother was a suspect because he knew no one would be home.

The second officer went to the Avenue B home to take a burglary report.

When she arrived, the residents had found footprints in the backyard. The male resident said the footprint matched shoes his brother wore.

There were no signs of forced entry. The back door was not completely shut, and the officer lifted a fingerprint from the dead bolt.

Nothing but the television was missing, but the wall were it had been was slightly damaged.

About 11:05 p.m., the male resident spoke with police again, providing the serial number of the television and saying he spoke with his brother and no longer believed he was a suspect. He said he was trying to find out where his television was and would call the police department when he did.

• About 4 a.m., an officer went to a business in the 1600 block of South Avenue D in reference to larceny.

The manager said a customer stole a neon sign.

Security video footage showed a suspect unplugging the sign about 1:55 p.m. and, about 2:40 p.m., taking it out the emergency exit.

The manager said the bartender was outside smoking at the time and the incident wasn’t reported then because a band set up and covered the area where the sign had been with speakers. She said the suspect came to the business once a day and provided a name.

The officer was later sent to the 700 block of West 17th Lane in reference to the manager possibly locating the suspect’s residence. She and an Eastern New Mexico University police officer spoke with the suspect, who said he would return the light.

The suspect said he and the manager had an ongoing joke about taking the sign. The manager confirmed the joke’s existence and said she had told him not to take the sign.

Charges are pending.

• An officer was dispatched to a church in the 600 block of South of Avenue B about 12:20 p.m. to handle a report of two auto burglaries.

An 18-year-old woman said while she was in church, someone broke into the passenger-side window of her Honda sport utility vehicle and stole three credit cards, a $1,500 bracelet, $132 and a purse with identification and makeup.

An officer obtained a palm print from the passenger-side door.

Also, a 21-year-old man said someone went into his unlocked Ford Explorer and stole his $200 iPod. An officer took a fingerprint from the passenger-side door.

Both victims thought the thefts occurred between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

The case is inactive due to lack of suspects and evidence.
