My turn: Easter time for new clothes

April 19, 2011

Christmas. Easter. And Back-To-School.

Those were the only times of year we got new clothes as children. Come Easter, we excitedly headed to Gibson’s with mom for new dresses and shiny plastic white shoes.

As a child, Easter was about colored eggs, chocolate bunnies and Oasis State Park for an old-fashion Easter egg hunt and picnic.

For us kids, it was out of the new dresses and into cutoffs so we could dive into the sand dunes, back when there were sand hills at Oasis. Running along the back paths and seeing the remains of camp fires, older kids, like Paul, scared us with stories of devil worshipers in the dunes.

I remember the Easter when Uncle Jerry loaded all of us kids into the back of his green Chevy and took us for a little ride while the “Easter bunnies” hid eggs.

We went to Easter Mass, so it wasn’t just about bunnies and eggs. Easter was and still is a time to celebrate The Risen Lord, and oh yeah, time to enjoy the treat we gave up for Lent.

I remember in high school when we gave up soda. As soon as Mass was over, Paula drove us to Pat’s Drive-In. Soda never tasted so good.

Happy Easter. He is risen.
