Freedom New Mexico

Portales police are investigating the death of a 25-year-old man found at 710 N. Ave. 0 on Sunday night.

Deputy Police Chief Lonnie Berry said officials have not determined a cause of death, but believe it is suspicious. He would not release a name because the next of kin had not been notified, he said.

About 7:30 p.m. Sunday, sheriff's deputies from Cochran County, Texas, notified Portales police of a burned, abandoned vehicle they had found, according to a Portales police news release. The vehicle belonged to the Portales man.

According to the release, Portales officers went to the address provided for the man, but couldn’t contact anyone there.

About 9 p.m. Sunday, officers were sent to the same address because a family member reported the man had sustained injuries and was unresponsive, according to the release. Police and emergency medical personnel found the man dead.

Police have investigated the residence in search of a cause of the injuries, according to the release. Police are interviewing witnesses, and the Office of the Medical Investigator will perform an autopsy this morning, Berry said.

Cochran County Sheriff's Deputy Ben Bristow said he couldn't yet release information on the burned car because the investigation was ongoing.
