Zias 7th, Hounds 9th at Odessa rodeo

ODESSA, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s women finished seventh out of 11 teams while the men were ninth out of 14 over the weekend in the Odessa College rodeo.

The Zias finished with 90 points while the Greyhounds had 135. Howard College was first in men’s competition followed by Texas Tech, while Tarleton State edged past Tech for the women’s team title.

Freshman TiAda Gray of Tatum took fourth in women’s calf roping with a two-head total of 16.6 seconds, after placing second in the short go.

For the ENMU men, sophomore Christian Pettigrew of Fort Sumner accounted for all 90 team points, placing fourth in calf roping with an average of 21.3 seconds after coming in sixth in the short-go. Junior Brock Dearing and sophomore Loren Doughty took sixth in the average and won the first round of team roping as individual competitors with a time of 6.2 seconds, and sophomore Jessie Kirkes of Carlsbad was second in the first round of goat tying with a time of 7.4 seconds.

ENMU squads travel this weekend to a rodeo at Snyder, Texas, hosted by Western Texas College.
