March 27 — Police blotter

Samplings of recent calls to Portales law enforcement, according to police records:

Tuesday

• An officer went to a business in the 500 block of West 18th Street about 2:30 p.m. in reference to a shoplifter in custody of the store’s management.

The store owner said he saw an 18-year-old woman pick up several items and walk to the other side of the store. As she walked past the checkout counters, he saw the items in her purse.

The owner said he stopped the woman, took her to his office and called the police. He showed the officer what he said the woman was trying to take: Two 1-pound packages of ground beef, a package of cheese and a package of tortillas, worth a total of $17.32.

The woman said she only took the items because she was hungry and trying to feed her family.

The officer arrested her and took her to Roosevelt County Detention Center.
