One of the writers for the paper e-mailed me a few days ago for my thoughts on five romantic places for a date. I got the e-mail at 4 a.m. as I prepared for my day and he desired my input as soon as possible.
Out of my sleep-gummed brain came a few ideas, like walking through the cemetery at Wheatland in Quay County, going yard sale-ing together, touring the UFO Museum in Roswell, a picnic at the northern edge of The Caprock, or dinner and a movie holding hands.
“I see you wrote about romantic places for dates,” said The Lady of the House from behind her newspaper. “Interesting…a cemetery?”
“Sure,” I said. “They’re fun, informative. You walk by the headstones at the Wheatland Cemetery it’s like a silent story of life on the High Plains.”
“Uh huh,” she said from behind the newspaper. “And the UFO Museum? I can see the romance in the long drive, but the UFOs?”
“They might have a picture of The Great Silver Ships. I keep waiting for them to land.”
“Now I did like the picnic at the edge of the Caprock idea and the yard sale-ing,” she said, ignoring me. “Why didn’t you just mention the places where we’ve been?”
“Well it was 4 a.m. and I wasn’t thinking of those things. I thought they were looking for something unusual.”
“Sometimes simple is best,” she said. “There’s watching the Sandhill Cranes land outside Muleshoe or star gazing at Oasis or even just riding bicycles on a quiet Sunday morning?” she said.
“So how about dinner and a movie?” I ask.
The Lady of the House put down her paper and looked over the top of her glasses and said, “As long as it’s not one of your apocalyptic America-slides-into-the-ocean or aliens-attack-and-everyone-dies movies.”
