The Clovis sound is going to Carlsbad.
The Carlsbad Museum and Arts Center is hosting a look back at the Norman Petty recording studios in Clovis, and the era of music made popular by artists like Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Tommy Allsup, and The Fireballs who recorded here.
The concert, a promotion for the Clovis Sound touring museum exhibit, is Jan. 8 at the Walter Gerrells Performing Arts Center. Scheduled to perform are Allsup at 7 p.m. and The Fireballs at 8 p.m.
“The objects for that exhibit come from Clovis,” Carlsbad Museum and Arts Center Director Patsy Jackson-Christopher said. “They’re from Kenneth Broad at Norman Petty Studios and the Clovis Chamber of Commerce.”
Jackson-Christopher said she’s always been interested in the rock ‘n’ roll music, particularly what came from the Clovis studio, and loved it when a similar exhibit toured through Ruidoso Downs when she worked at the Hubbard Museum.
“This is something a little different from a normal concert because we do have a reception before the show that will allow people to meet the artists,” Jackson-Christopher said. “Hopefully, we will have some other Norman Petty Studio aficionados.
“We’ll play ‘pass the mic’ and they can tell stories about the time they spent in Clovis and the time they spent recording at Norman Petty Studios.”
The 3 p.m. reception at the museum is free, and concert tickets range from $10 for children 12-17 to $50 for families. Children younger than 12 are admitted free.
