Portales Women’s Club

Portales Woman’s Club met on Oct. 13 with President Della Kobernick presiding. The Collect was led by Wanda Pettus; the pledges by Julie Nickles; and Argen Duncan gave the invocation.

There were 30 members and 7 guests, present.

Steven Gamble, president of Eastern New Mexico University, and John Niebling, president of Clovis Community College, spoke about the upcoming general obligation bond election and asked for support of Bond D.

June Ferguson presented blue carnations to Lois Crozier, who served as treasurer and to Della Kobernick, convention chair of the recently held District Three Conference.

Gaynelle Thomas was also recognized for the memorial service she conducted at Conference.

Carol Fletcher reported on the convention and thanked the club for allowing her and Gertie Swager to serve as the club’s delegates.

A board recommendation was approved to change Standing Rule 14 and allow the president’s expenses to the convention to be covered by the club in the same manner as the delegates.

A work day was scheduled to make centerpieces for the upcoming South Central Regional Conference in Albuquerque. Heidi Foshee, home life chair, reminded members about items needed for the Children’s Homes in Portales.

Teresa Howard asked for volunteers to help with delivering Meals on Wheels in November and to help with the mayor’s Christmas tree activities on Nov. 15. Gertie Swager asked for members to work at the upcoming Peanut Festival.

Following the close of the business meeting, Patrice Tompkins introduced models representing Sheila’s Classy to Whimsey, The Fashion Girl, Consigning Women and Diversity as they showed new fall fashions. Tompkins presented the store owners with certificates of appreciation.

The next meeting is on Nov. 10 at 8:30 a.m. and guests are welcome.
