My turn: Decoys help catch poachers
September 27, 2010
The Department of Game and Fish in different states have enlisted the help of taxidermist to come up with something to lure unsuspecting poachers.
The irony of it all is that most hunters use this to catch their game.
It is a decoy or I should say a mechanical decoy which acts like a living deer. There are some models that actually blow smoke to simulate the hot breath of a living animal.
I remember seeing a story on the news about it back in Tennessee about seven or eight years ago. I found a couple videos of stings game and fish have done in Tennessee, Oregon, New Mexico and Florida on YouTube and a few stories elsewhere.
The technology that goes into one of these things is about the same as working with a remote control toy or one of those creepy Santa Claus dolls that swing their arms and swivel their heads to music.
They are very realistic.
So next time your driving out on the back roads of New Mexico or some other state and see a deer, if you think about shooting it, it better be with a camera because it could be a decoy and poaching carries some heavy fines.
