Pajama fashion statement not for me

Grant McGee

The Lady of the House and I were getting out of the car at the supermarket the other day when a young woman caught my eye. Her attire grabbed my attention: Pink pajama bottoms with white bunnies on them, pink fuzzy slippers and a t-shirt that read “GREAT PLACES TO SAY %$&*.”

When did it become OK to wear pajamas in public? Did you get the memo on that? I sure didn’t.

And yet more and more of our neighbors are showing up at the supermarket, Wally World, downtown or wherever, shuffling around in fuzzy slippers and pajama bottoms with cute bunnies or whatever on the fabric.

And t-shirts with rough words on them like “%$&*.” I can’t even make reference to that four-letter word here.

I did get the memo on that loud and clear from my mom.

I was 8 years old and my buddy Catfish had just shared with me this snappy bad word. I said it at home and my momma promptly washed my mouth out with soap.

And I sure wouldn’t have gotten out of the house with that word on a t-shirt.

Another lesson I got from my mom was there were clothes you wear to one place but not to another.

There are work clothes, you generally don’t mind if they get dirty.

There are church clothes, you kept these especially clean.

There were school clothes, and so on.

If she’d have seen me trying to leave the house in my pajamas, she’d have grabbed me by the collar and yanked me back.

Fashion update ... In the time I was putting this article together I was in one of our retail establishments and spied a woman wearing a bathrobe. It wasn’t even tied; the belt was dangling around her fuzzy slippers.

Makes me wonder, where are these folks’ mommas?
