Inmate recaptured without incident

Cordova

Tuesday afternoon Curry County Sheriff’s investigators recaptured a 45-year-old inmate released by mistake July 21.

Johnny Cordova was found at a family member’s residence in the 200 block of Brionne Drive and taken into custody without incident around 1 p.m., Undersheriff Wesley Waller said.

Cordova initially believed he had been released legitimately, Waller said, but learned through media coverage Monday that his release was a mistake.

He was cooperative with officers, who transported him back to the jail, Waller said.

Cordova, who still had a portion of a six-month sentence remaining to be served at the jail, was mistakenly released after he returned from a court appearance in another case and had been granted bond by a judge.

Law enforcement learned of the mistake Monday, five days after the release.
