2-28 Police blotter

Samplings of recent calls received by Clovis-area law enforcement officers, according to reports:

Around 4 p.m. Feb. 13 an officer responded to McDonald’s at 14th and Mitchell for a report of a homeless child asking for food.

A woman said she bought a child’s meal for a 6-year-old girl, who said she was homeless and needed food.

The officer spoke with the child, who initially told him she was 16 and had just come from a swimming party. Later, the girl said she was 6 but didn’t want her dad to know where she was because she would get in trouble.

The officer got the girl to show him where she lived and when they arrived, he knocked on the door but the girl opened it and entered so he followed her inside.

The officer noted the house smelled of burned marijuana, was cluttered with dirty clothes and dishes and the child’s father and another child were sleeping on couches in the living room. The officer also noted there were several burned marijuana roach butts on top of a box in the living room.

After several attempts, the officer was able to wake the girl’s father.

When the officer told the man where he had found his daughter, the man began to cry and said he had laid down for a nap with the children after his wife left for work.

The man said he had smoked marijuana several hours before and directed the officer to his pipe in a bedroom.

The officer contacted a child services and told the man he would be filing charges for possession of marijuana at a later date.

Around 7 p.m. Feb. 13 an officer responded to a business in the 3000 block of North Prince Street for a report of a hit and run with injuries.

A man said he was sitting in his vehicle with his mother and saw a woman pick up a box of laundry detergent that they had set on the ground beside their vehicle for a friend they were waiting on who was still inside the store.

He said he and his mother got out of the vehicle and told the woman the detergent was theirs and the woman started arguing with his mother.

When his mother told the woman she was calling police, he said the woman got into her vehicle and started backing up, striking his mother as she was attempting to write down the license plate number.

He said the vehicle then drove off.

The officer viewed surveillance footage from the store and noted events transpired as described.

The officer classified the case as a larceny and aggravated battery and turned it over to a detective.

About 1 a.m. Feb. 16 an officer responded to a business in the 2000 block of West Seventh Street for a report of a burglary in progress.

When the officer arrived he saw a 17-year-old he was familiar with sitting in front of the door.

The boy rolled onto his stomach and said “I did it but I didn’t get in”.

The officer noted a glass pane at the front of the store was shattered and there was blood and a rock near the smashed door.

The officer asked the teen why he did it and he replied, “I don’t know, attention I guess.”

The boy told him he hadn’t spoken to his mother in a while because he had left home and been staying with friends.

Juvenile authorities said the boy did not score high enough to be placed in juvenile detention so his mother was called and he was turned over to her custody.

Around 11 a.m. Feb. 16 an officer responded to a property in the 1000 block of McDonald Street for a report of larceny.

A man said he was there to check on his horses and discovered several bales of hay he had placed in front of the stable were missing.

He said the hay was valued at more than $40.
