PNT Staff Reports
Winter wasn't ready to let up Friday morning.
The temperature was 16 degrees just before 8 a.m. in Portales, according to Accuweather. Overnight, 1-5 inches of more snow had accumulated on top of yesterday's snow in the area, said Maria Torres, intern meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Albuquerque.
She said Saturday and Sunday were expected to be sunny with a high of 46 Saturday and 51 Sunday.
Portales Police Deputy Chief Lonnie Berry said his department had no major weather-related problems during the night, but city and Roosevelt County officers had helped stranded motorists.
Berry said police hoped traffic would stay low until roads were sanded again, because newfallen snow makes streets slick.
Also, the New Mexico Department of Transportation Web site reported severe driving conditions on U.S. 70 and U.S. 60/84.
Postponed high school games include Portales' road games (girls at Hobbs, boys at Roswell) and District 3-1A doubleheaders with Melrose visiting Elida and Floyd visiting Dora. The Portales girls will play their District 4-3A game Saturday at Dexter, Athletic Director Mark McAfee said. The action will start at 1:30 p.m. with the junior varsity contest.
Eastern New Mexico University has a home basketball doubleheader scheduled 6 p.m. Saturday against Lone Star Conference South Division rival Angelo State. Sports Information Director Adam Pitterman said as of Friday morning, those games are still on the schedule.
