12-31 Police blotter

Samplings of recent calls received by Clovis-area law enforcement officers, according to reports:

About 5 p.m. Dec. 20 an officer responded to a residence in the 900 block of Jones for a report of a vicious dog.

The resident said he shot his dog because it attacked him.

The 61-year-old said he got up from the bed where he was lying with his male and female mastiffs and the male looked at him in a way that made him uneasy.

The man said he backed up towards a doorway and the dog lunged at him, biting him in the head, then again in the arm.

He said he pushed the dog off of him and grabbed a gun from a nearby table and emptied the magazine, firing eight shots into the dog. He said the dog ran into the living room and he was able to shut the bedroom door and call for help.

Officers found the dog lying dead in the living room.

Because of extenuating circumstances, the officer chose not to charge the man for firing his weapon.

About 3 p.m. Dec. 21 an officer responded to a residence in the 100 block of Dawn Loop to assist social services in checking the welfare of three children.

The officer had the children’s mother show him through the house and noted there was trash on the floor, dirty dishes in the sink and on the counters, and dirty diapers and clothes lying around the residence. The officer also document clothes piled in the bathroom in such a way the children could not access the shower to bathe.

The officer also noted roaches crawling around on the walls, through the dishes, inside the refrigerator and cabinets as well as through the rest of the house, including the children’s bedroom.

When the officer informed the mother the children would be placed in the custody of social services, she attempted to get in the vehicle with the children.

She was arrested for interfering with an officer.

About 8 a.m. Dec. 22 an officer responded to a residence in the 900 block of Prarieview for a report of theft.

A woman said someone stole a statue of baby Jesus from a nativity decoration in her front yard.

She said it had to have happened between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., when she went to sleep because she had been up all night cooking and could see the front yard through the kitchen window.

The officer couldn’t find any footprints and no one in the neighborhood reported seeing anything unusual.

About 10 a.m. Dec. 22 an officer responded to a business in the 200 block of Tennessee Street for a report of a burglary.

A man said when he arrived at his warehouse, he noticed the door was slightly open.

He discovered a washing machine had been taken and a crowbar was left in the building that might have been used to open the door.

The washing machine was valued around $500.
