Mayor's Ball benefits charities

A trio of local charities stand to benefit from this year’s annual Mayor’s Ball.

Proceeds from the ball, scheduled for Nov. 21, are earmarked for Clovis Animal Welfare League, Clovis MainStreet and the United Way of Eastern New Mexico.

Mayor Gayla Brumfield said she selected the three groups because she had a difficult time choosing only one charity.

“They’re all three such good things and I couldn’t pick. There’s a need with all of them,” she said.

“We just want to try to help in some small way, as much as we possibly can for the community... It’s something for a good cause.”

Brumfield said she felt programs the groups are trying to find money for — MainStreet’s streetscapes, a mobile pet spay and neuter van brought to the community by CAWL and the many programs supported by United Way — and wanted to support them all.

“I think it’s fantastic,” said Darlene Ray, president of CAWL. “We can always find something to spend it on.”

Ray said her group works to improve the plight of animals in the community and helps the city animal shelter by providing items needed for the care of animals, such as leashes and pet carriers.

The annual ball includes dinner, a silent auction and live music by the Fun Brothers.

Tickets are $75 and available at the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce.

Approximately 200 tickets have sold, Brumfield said.

This is the second year Brumfield has hosted the ball.

Last year’s ball was held New Years Eve, however Brumfield said she decided to hold it earlier in the year as more of a kick off for the holiday season.
