Freedom New Mexico

The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team made 11th-ranked Midwestern State work hard Friday before the Mustangs prevailed 2-0 in a Lone Star Conference match at the ENMU pitch.

The loss was the first in six home matches this season for the Greyhounds (10-4-2, 1-3 LSC). Their last home setback came in the 2008 finale against Midwestern.

ENMU played shorthanded for much of the match after a red card was issued to freshman midfielder Diego Santos with just over 27 minutes gone. Midwestern junior midfielder Paulo Teixiera beat ENMU freshman goalkeeper Alistair Caldwell from the right side less than three minutes later foff a through pass from teammate Craig Sutherland.

Teixiera assisted on an insurance goal for Midwestern (11-1-2, 3-0-1) early in the second half, finding Dean Lovegrove in front with a cross pass from the left side.

Caldwell made a season-high eight saves in helping keep the Hounds in the match. Meantime, junior keeper Raul Herrera didn’t have to make a save en route to his 10th shutout of the season, a single-season school record.

Midwestern, which visits West Texas A&M on Sunday in a battle for the league lead, outshot the Hounds 33-4 overall.
