Hounds win opener

HOBBS — Freshman midfielder Kal Herbert and junior forward Emerson Rodrigues scored less than a minute apart, breaking a scoreless tie late in the half and lifting Eastern New Mexico University’s men’s soccer team to a 3-1 win over University of the Southwest on Friday.

The host Mustangs (1-1) pulled to 2-1 on a goal by Callum Congreve in the 69th minute. ENMU’s Michael James, who assisted on Herbert’s tally, then salted it away by heading in a corner kick from Edgar Bear with less than nine minutes left.
