Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

May 30, 1967

Twenty-year-old Wichita Falls, Texas, resident Gary Stewart was being held in the Roosevelt County jail after being unable to pay a $165 fine imposed on him for reckless driving and failure to stop for an emergency vehicle. Stewart, who would also lose his driver's license for 30 days, was traveling to California and was in between Clovis and Portales when a police officer signaled for him to pull over. The youth, thinking he could outrun the police vehicle, crashed into a service station on North Chicago.
