Clovis, NM: The New Mexico District Attorney's Association announced

today that Assistant District Attorney Ben Cross and Ninth Judicial

District Attorney's District Manager Kevin Spears were named the 2008

New Mexico Prosecutors' Community Prosecutor of the Year Award and the

2008 New Mexico District Attorney's Association Administrative Employee

of the Year respectively.

The New Mexico District Attorney's Association and the New Mexico's

Prosecutors Section annually award eight state employees in eight

different categories each year to an employee that works for one of the

fourteen New Mexico's Judicial District Attorneys. New Mexico District

Attorneys' employ approximately 700 employees statewide, all of whom

were eligible to receive one of these eight awards. The awards received

formally recognize Ben Cross and Kevin Spears for their outstanding

contribution to the Ninth Judicial District (Curry and Roosevelt

Counties) and the State of New Mexico.

Ben Cross was recognized as the 2008 New Mexico Prosecutors' Community

Prosecutor of the Year for his community service work with the Clovis

and Portales Schools by and through the Ninth Judicial District

Attorney's program known as A.C.T. (Abolish Chronic Truancy). This

program in one geared toward letting students know the risk factors of

dropping out of school, as well as the benefits of staying in school.

This program has received statewide attention and credited by local

school officials as one of many reasons that local truancy rates

decreased by nearly 4% last year.

Kevin Spears was recognized as the 2008 New Mexico District Attorney's

Association Administrative Employee of the Year for his diligent work

and efforts administratively within the Ninth Judicial District

Attorney's Office. Mr. Spears' innovation is credited for many of the

district's local programs such as the "A.C.T" program, "The Newman

Project" (a safety for seniors program) and the "Meth-Watch" program.

According to District Attorney Matthew Chandler, "We are so proud to

have two of our own receive statewide recognition this year. Ben Cross

and Kevin Spears both have a great passion for their jobs, and we are

extremely fortunate to have these two gentlemen serving the people of

Roosevelt and Curry Counties through the District Attorney's Office."

This is the fifth consecutive year an employee from the Ninth Judicial

District has been recognized with an award from the State of New

Mexico's District Attorney's Association and New Mexico's Prosecutor's

Section.

With the exception of Albuquerque, no other district in the State has

received as many awards for service over the past five years as the

Ninth Judicial District Attorney's Office.

of the Year

2008 - Ben Cross, New Mexico's Community Service Prosecutor of the Year
