February 26, 2009
Name: Don Criss
Job: KENW director of production services
Time on job: 35 years
Background: Criss grew up in Upstate New York and came to Eastern New Mexico University in 1962. He earned a bachelor’s degree in theater and a master’s degree in educational media from ENMU.
What does your job entail?: I supervise the production of five local television programs.
What is a typical day like for you?: I have no really typical day. But today, for instance, I helped out with the production of Creative Living, which is Sheryl Borden’s show. I looked over new equipment, and I’m preparing to install it in Studio B. And along the way, I trained some student camera operators.
Why did you choose this job?: I have always been fascinated by the television industry, and this was a great job to participate in it.
What training do you need for this job?: My bachelor’s in theater helped, and I was the first person ever to minor or major in radio and television at ENMU. And I worked in commercial television for four years in Odessa, Texas, before I came here to work. I taught a year of high school speech and drama at Roswell High.
What do you enjoy most about the job?: Working with all of the very intelligent people I work with, including students.
