Airport to undergo renovations

The Portales Municipal Airport will undergo significant improvements over the spring and summer upon receiving federal and state grants worth more than $600,000

Portales city councilors agreed to accept the money at the Portales City Council regular meeting Tuesday night.

The state grant, in the amount of $23,684 is made available by the New Mexico Department of Transportation Aviation Division for airport facility improvements. The federal part of the funding depends on project bids.

Mike Parkey, airport services director, has identified three projects to be funded by the grant including a building to house airport snow removal equipment, extensive airport signage and the renovation of a key runway.

Before improvements can be made, the projects will go through the bidding process.

“This airport was built in 1987 and most of the stuff out there was from then,”
