Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

How to contact your representative

With the economy faltering and jobs possibly hanging in the balance, many want to know what their representative is doing for them in Washington these days.

Curry and Roosevelt County are represented in Congress by U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, and Sers. Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall.

But while these federal lawmakers make periodic trips to the eastern New Mexico region, the closest office any of the three maintains is a two-hour drive away in Roswell.

Udall’s press secretary Marissa Padilla said the senator did have an office in Clovis when he was a congressman.

But when Udall moved into the Senate, he had to shut down the Clovis office due to office space restrictions, she said.

Padilla said by federal law, senators can only maintain less than 5,000 square feet of office space in their state.

Udall now maintains temporary offices in Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Santa Fe. The senator is determining where his permanent offices will be located, Padilla said.

“Senator Udall has always spent a lot of time on the east side and has been active with Cannon and the new mission. No matter what, Tom will have a presence in eastern New Mexico and will continue to be out there as much as possible,” she said.

Aside from official duties in the House and Senate, legislators also take a keen interest in hearing the concerns of their constituents, according to Bingaman’s press secretary Maria Najera.

“We answer all constituent inquiries. If you live in New Mexico, we want to hear what you think,” she said. “We take all comments and feedback very seriously.”

Najera said the senator takes each expressed concern with him when he goes to Capitol Hill.

Bingaman, Lujan and Udall staff several offices in New Mexico -- again, none in Clovis or Portales -- as well as one in Washington.

Najera said that if a constituent has a concern about a bill or simply has a question, they can call one of the offices and talk with a staff member about what their legislator is working on.

All three legislators also produce newsletters, often on-line and a print product.

“It’s very important for (Bingaman) to hear from people,” Najera said. “And it’s important for people to know what he is doing.”
