Midwestern routs Hounds

January 25, 2009

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Guards Nolan Richardson and Craig Green combined for 43 points and Midwestern State shot 61 percent from the field Saturday night in an 83-44 Lone Star Conference South Division men’s rout of Eastern New Mexico University.

The Mustangs (14-5, 3-1 South), winning for the 11th time in their last 12 games, dominated from the get-go. They hit 9-of-17 shots while holding the Greyhounds (4-14, 0-3) to 37 percent shooting from the field, including 0-of-6 from the free throw line.

Junior guard Aaron King was ENMU’s lone double-figure scorer, finishing with 11 points.

King converted a steal into the game’s first basket in the opening minute, but it was all Mustangs after that.

The Hounds held Midwestern without a field goal for nearly three minutes before Michael Godwin’s dunk put the Mustangs in front 4-2. Dannon Wafer’s layup pulled ENMU to 9-4, but senior Trajainski Grigsby’s 3-pointer capped a 9-0 run that gave Midwestern a 14-point cushion with 11 minutes left in the half.

The lead reached 31-9 with four minutes left in the half before the Hounds put together a bit of a rally, closing to 35-17 at halftime.

ENMU was still within 19 (44-25) after a layup by King nearly four minutes into the second half. Neither team scored for nearly three minutes after that, but the Mustangs went on a 17-1 run for a 60-26 lead with 10 minutes left.

The Hounds had just two field goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half and finished the half 8-of-23 from the field.

Grigsby, who did not start, went 6-for-9 from the floor and had three 3-pointers to finish with 15 points. The Mustangs forced the Hounds into 29 turnovers in the game.

The Hounds, who have not won on the road in nine tries this season, return home for division contests against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday and Angelo State on Saturday.
