Annual MLK events set

The Clovis Martin Luther King Jr. Commission is hosting its 17th annual breakfast Saturday at the Clovis High School Cafeteria.

The breakfast is part of the celebration of King’s efforts for civil liberties. A walk commemorating demonstrations from the civil rights movement in the 1960s is scheduled for Monday.

The deadline to buy tickets for the breakfast has passed but the event is open to the public, according to Commission President Joyce Pollard.

The breakfast raises money for the Clovis Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund. The commission awards two Clovis High School students $1,000 each, Pollard said.

The commission invited radio host Rufus Johnson Sr. to speak during the event.

Pollard said the event also features speech, essay and poster contest winners from Clovis students. Students from the Arts Academy at Bella Vista will also perform during the event.

Monday's commemorative walk starts 9 a.m. at Yucca Middle School.

King, a Baptist minister from Montgomery, Ala., led the civil rights movement in the 1960s. King was killed in 1968 in Memphis, Tenn.
