Police academy seeks volunteers

Freedom New Mexico

The Clovis Police Department needs residents to participate in a Citizens Police Academy, according to a press release.

Tentatively scheduled to begin in February, the 12-week course is designed to give citizens a better understanding of the training, duties and responsibilities involved in being a police officer, the release said.

The course is free. Interested persons must be willing to submit to a background check, officer Eric Muller said.

The course is a collaborative effort among local law enforcement and related agencies. Topics include, criminal law, investigations, traffic law and crash investigations, drug interdiction, and domestic violence, the release said.

Participants also get hands-on experience in crime scene investigations, firearms and driving.

Muller said there are 15 openings and classes will be held on Tuesday nights.
