Crash claims life of Clovis man

A 31-year-old Clovis man died Tuesday from injuries suffered last week in a two-car collision east of Clovis.

Wesley Hess died at 1:58 p.m. (CST) at the University Medical Center in Lubbock, according to a New Mexico State Police news release.

State Police Capt. Jimmy Glascock said Hess sustained multiple injuries including blunt force trauma to the head from the collision.

Police gave this account of the crash:

Hess was a passenger in a speeding 2001 Ford Mustang headed south on Curry Road G. The driver lost control of the vehicle and went into a broadside skid.

The Mustang hit a culvert on the east side of the road, causing the car to spin back into the roadway. The rear of the Mustang then hit the front of a 2006 four-door Chrysler headed in the opposite direction.

The Mustang burst into flames in a field on the east side of the road.

Ryan Carter, 19, who was driving, is still reported in critical condition at the medical center, according to Glascock.

Passengers in the Chrysler were treated at Plains Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.
