Background: Dixon, originally from Canada, attended law school in St. Louis, Mo., and obtained his degree in 1984. He then worked for the district attorney's office in Hobbs for two years, later practicing for a private firm for three years. In 1990, Dixon moved to Portales and opened his own law firm. He also teaches business law at Eastern New Mexico University, Cannon Air Force Base and New Mexico Junior College.

Time on job: 18 years.

What does your job entail? I advise people of their legal rights, prepare legal documents and represent people in court and other tribunals throughout New Mexico, Texas and Colorado.

What is a typical day like for you? I generally see people for appointments for several hours. I also attend court hearings and prepare pleadings and other legal documents throughout the day.

Why did you choose this career field? I wanted to help people and make a difference.

What type of training do you need? One would need a four-year undergraduate degree and then a three-year law degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school. If you want to become a specialist as I have, you are required to take an examination by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and allow yourself to be reviewed by peers as to your expertise.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I most enjoy interacting with people and clients, and helping people solve their problems.
