After absorbing its first loss of the season two nights earlier at West Texas A&M, third-ranked Central Oklahoma was in no mood to fool around on Saturday.
The Bronchos hit three consecutive 3-pointers — two by guard Chance Hardaker — and opened an 11-0 lead over Eastern New Mexico University en route to a 78-59 Lone Star Conference men’s crossover win at Greyhound Arena.
Central Oklahoma (8-1) held the Greyhounds to 19 shots while forcing 12 turnovers en route to a 39-17 halftime lead. The margin stayed above 20 all the way through the second half until the final 3 1/2 minutes, when the Hounds (2-5) were able to get it to 19 on three occasions.
The Bronchos had a fairly quiet game from long range after their quick start, finishing 6-for-19. With the big lead, they were able to play their bench for significant stretches and had only one player with more than 23 minutes for the game.
Only reserves Michael Sonsanya with 12 points and DeAngelo Garrett with 10 reached double figures for UCO, but six other players scored between seven and nine points. The Bronchos also dominated the backboards by a 43-31 margin.
For ENMU, junior forward Equs Darby finished with 13 points, while junior guards Jimmy Marshall and Aaron King added 12 and 11, respectively. The Hounds shot just under 40 percent for the game, including 3-for-16 from 3-point range.
Junior forward Dannon Wafer grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for ENMU.
