Republicans sweep county votes

Roosevelt County voters bucked the national and state trend, choosing Republican John McCain by 4,285 votes to 2,270 votes for Democrat Barack Obama.

Totals include 6,683 ballots, including most of the absentee votes.

Roosevelt County voters also favored Republican Steve Pearce for U.S. Senate, though Democrat Tom Udall is projected to win statewide.

County voters also favored Republicans Dan East for U.S. Representative District 3, Matthew Rush for state representative District 63, and Dennis Roch for state representative District 67 — Rush and East were trailing at the state level.

In the only contested local race, voters chose Republican Barbara George for probate judge with 4,359 votes to 2,085 votes for Democrat Mark Paternoster.

For Roosevelt General Hospital Board, District 5, a non-partisan race, voters chose Lonnie Alexander with 660 votes to 501 votes for Bill Rice.
