Lawrence lifts Zias past East Central

Freedom New Mexico

Junior forward Samantha Lawrence continued to add to her school single-season goals record, knocking in her 13th of the season Sunday to lift the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team past East Central 2-1 in a Lone Star Conference match at the ENMU pitch.

East Central (4-5-1, 0-2-1 LSC) scored first with Sydney Kramer tallying on an assist by Candace Baird. The Zias (7-5, 1-2) tied it with less than five minutes to go in the half when sophomore forward Alicia Cunnngham knocked a rebound of her own shot past Lady Tigers keeper Kelly Davis.

ENMU stepped up its attack when play resumed, and Lawrence headed in a free kick by freshman midfielder Kim Luna with just under nine minutes gone in the half.

Lawrence’s two points give her 28 for the season, two off the school single-season mark held by Megan Dozier (2004).

The Zias ended a stretch of eight of nine matches at home, going 7-2 in that time and 7-1 at home.

Hounds fall to Texas A&M-International

Texas A&M-International scored twice in less than a minute in the second half Sunday, rallying for a 2-1 victory over Eastern New Mexico University’s men at the ENMU soccer pitch.

The Dustdevils (6-4) tied the match on a rebound goal by Abel Villavicencio at the 55:17 mark. Then, just 46 seconds later, Roy Hernandez knocked in a goal in a similar situation to give A&M-International the lead.

After going without a shot on goal in a 1-0 loss to St. Mary’s on Friday, the Greyhounds (3-4-2) managed only one shot on goal against A&M-International. That came with about 15 minutes left in the first half when senior defender Michael James netted his third goal of the season.

That goal came after a foul was called on the Dustdevils in the offensive zone. Sophomore midfielder Thiago Silveira launched a free kick along the sideline from about 30 yards out, and James headed the ball past Dustdevils goalkeeper Juan Pablo to put ENMU in front.

The Dustdevils had a 7-1 edge in shots on goal for the match. Senior goalkeeper Grant Shanahan was credited with four saves for the Hounds.
