Cowgirls sweep Zias

Freedom New Mexico

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Ashley Murray collected 11 kills and Kristina Petty added 10 kills and four aces Tuesday night as New Mexico Highlands posted a 25-12, 25-17, 25-17 victory over Eastern New Mexico University.

The Zias (4-11) were competitive in the middle game, but Highlands (5-5) dominated the first and third sets to cruise to the victory.

Highlands led the entire first game except for a 1-1 tie. The Zias were within 9-7 after an ace by Grace Brandt, but the Cowgirls finished the game on a 16-5 run.

ENMU led several times early in the second game, including twice by two points, but with the score 12-11 Highlands got two kills from Murray and one from Tiffany Neeley to force the Zias into a timeout. The Cowgirls pulled away, scoring 10 of the last 15 points.

Highlands scored the first two points in the third game, including an ace by Doreen Zamora, and never relinquished the lead. The Zias were within 12-11 when Highlands opened a commanding lead with six consecutive points.

ENMU had only one player with more than two kills — freshman Jessica King, with seven. Setter Vanessa Garcia had 29 assists and finished with 12 digs for the Cowgirls.
