Udall to host Academy Day at PHS

U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., will be hosting Academy Day at Portales High School from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday.

The purpose of the event is to inform high school students and their families about U.S. service academies. Among the academies represented will be the U.S. Air Force Academy and U.S. Military Academy.

Academy Days includes 13 different high schools across New Mexico.

Softball tournament planned

The city of Portales Cultural Affairs Committee is sponsoring a one-pitch single elimination softball tournament beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 14 at Lindsey Park in conjuction with the 2008 Diez y Seis de Septiembre Celebration.

Entry fee for teams is $50 with a 10 team limit. Rosters and entry fee are due by Thursday. Packets can be picked up at City Hall.

First place receives trophy and T-shirts, second and third a trophy.

Horseshoe pitching tourney set

The city of Portales Cultural Affairs Committee is sponsoring a horseshoe pitching tournament at 3 p.m. Sept. 14 at Lindsey Park in conjuction with the 2008 Diez y Seis de Septiembre Celebration.

Entry fee is $5 per entrant for the single elimination tournament. First through third place winners will receive cash prizes based on the number of entry fees received.
