Mom pleads for son to surrender

The mother of an escaped inmate from the Curry County Adult Detention Center said Monday she is hoping her son will turn himself in to authorities.

Melody Carter of Hale Center, Texas, said she is worried about the safety of her 19-year-old son, Larry McClendon Jr., who escaped along with seven other inmates.

McClendon was being held on robbery and murder charges.

“If he contacts me, I will tell him to turn himself in,” she told the CNJ on Monday afternoon. “I’m afraid that when things like this happen, people get shot or killed by the police.”

Carter said she has not heard from her son since last week and said there is “no reason that he would head here (to her home).”

She said the last time she talked to her son, he was optimistic things were going to work out in court.

Carter said last week McClendon asked her to attend his October trial for a robbery, “and I told him I would.”

McClendon is also charged with murder in the 2007 shooting death of Clovis store owner Emmett Salisbury.

Five of the inmates remained at large Monday night.
