Ortega elected Municipal League VP

Portales Mayor Orlando Ortega Jr. was elected vice president of the New Mexico Municipal League on Thursday during the organization’s annual conference in Clovis, according to a NMML press release. He previously served as treasurer.

Las Cruces Councilor Dolores Conner was elected president and Barb Wiard, mayor pro tem of Village of Taos Ski Valley is president-elect.

Officers assume their new duties on Oct. 1.

Farm Bill workshop scheduled

The Rocky Mountain Farmers Union is holding a workshop at 7 p.m. today at K-Bob’s Steakhouse regarding the Farm Bill, according to a press release from the Union.

National Farmers Union President Tom Bius will give an overview of the bill and experts from commodity groups, government, rural development and insurance will talked about selected parts of the legislation, according to the release.

Passed in congress in May, the bill would provide federal subsidies to the agricultural industry and funds nutrition, conservation and energy programs.
