Time on the job: Since March 2008. Pat has been a volunteer for Special Olympics prior for three years. Special Olympics of New Mexico was founded in 1968.
Q. Describe what your job entails?
A. I do all of the paperwork and coordinate events and fundraising. The Special Olympics is a non-profit organization and the job is non-paid. Special Olympics of New Mexico raises all of its own money so the athletes will be able to travel and host bowling, equestrian, and track and field in the area and the state.
Q. What is a typical day on the job like for you?
A. Writing letters for fundraising; attending Special Olympics practices, making phone calls. There are late nights working on paperwork. When money is donated to Special Olympics of New Mexico it is sent to the headquarters in Albuquerque where it is deposited into the account where it was intended. Then when Special Olympics of New Mexico groups need money for their travel and other expenses it is requested from the headquarters in Albuquerque.
Q. Why did you choose this job?
A. I wanted to continue the program after the previous coordinator stepped down for health reasons. I wanted to see Special Olympics of New Mexico grow in our area, Roosevelt, Curry and De Baca counties and see more athletes get involved. There is no cost for the athletes to be in Special Olympics all of the money is raised by local volunteers.
