Worship through song

According to music director Jason Paulk of Kingswood United Methodist Church, Marlyn Everett has been inspiring the congregation since 1958 with her ministry and volunteer work in the chapel choir.

Marlyn Everett says music was a large part of her life long before she joined the Kingswood church choir 50 years ago.

Everett remembers her mother trading cream from the family cow to pay for her and her older brother’s piano lessons when she was a young girl. She said she first experienced the power of music when her family would attended church each Sunday.

“Music has always been a source of comfort when you need to be comforted, and a joy when you are elated,” Everett said. “It serves every need.”

Everett said her first priority when singing is to serve the Lord, and although her voice may not be what it once was she will continue to minister through music.

“I feel now that I am getting a whole lot older and the voice is gone, He still knows what’s in my heart.”

Everett was presented with a plaque from the church inscribed with the verse Psalms 89:1 —“I will sing of the mercy of the Lord forever. With my mouth will I make known my faithfulness to all generations.”

Paulk presented Everett with the plaque, and said she has shown other generations the power of music without stepping into the spotlight.

“She does everything for the glory of God, and she will tell you that,” Paulk said. “She inspires in more of a quiet way.”

Everett also plays the piano, organ, and handbells at Kingswood.
