Manuel Varela, associate professor of biology, and his research students have had a manuscript accepted in the peer-refereed Journal of Dairy Research. The journal is ranked ninth out of all scientific journals within the “Agriculture, Dairy and Animal Science” category, and 25th of all scientific journals within the “Food Science and Technology” category. The title of the paper is “Reduced Susceptibilities to the Antimicrobial Agents Trimethoprim, Gatifloxacin, Cefotaxime and Tetracycline in Pasteurized Whole Milk Conferred via the marRAB Locus in Escherichia coli.” Co-authors of the work are all Eastern undergraduate and graduate students: Yang Peng, Ricardo L. Hernandez, Robert R. Crow, Suzanna E. Jones, Sara A. Mathews, Ayanna M. Arnold, Eliseo F. Castillo, and Jennifer M. Moseley.

Danny Woodward has nominated the ENMU faculty production of “And the Winner Is,” directed by Robert Vartabedian, as the best statewide MainStreet initiative for 2007.

The award presentation will be in Raton July 25.

Robin A. Wells, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Studies, has been appointed to a two-year term on the Early Childhood Action Network (ECAN) steering committee by Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish. The ECAN steering committee assists the lieutenant fovernor in shaping recommendations and framing long-range strategic approaches to improving early childhood outcomes in New Mexico. Wells’ two-year tenure runs through May 2010.

Professors Anthony B Schroeder and Glenda Balas (ENMU alum) presented a one-hour workshop on “Using Oral History and Family Stories to Improve Communication” at the Spring 2008 Student Teaching Final Seminar.

Michael Elrod, president of ENMU-Ruidoso, has announced that Chad Smith has been appointed vice president of Student Learning. The change in title reflects organizational restructuring in which Smith has assumed leadership responsibilities for academics and student service functions.

ENMU master’s graduate Keith Heingartner has been inducted into the Mount Marty College Athletic Hall of Fame in South Dakota. He is a former basketball player and coach.
