ENMU wins two events

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Eastern New Mexico University’s Nimrod Lelei and Steven Aragon won events over the weekend in Adams State’s Travis McKinley Open track meet.

Lelei took first place in the 1,500 meter in a time of four minutes, 18.07 seconds, while Aragon took javelin competition with a throw of 173-3 1/2 inches.

Robert Griego finished second for the Hounds to Aragon in javelin at 164-8. ENMU’s Josh Browning placed second in the 200 in 22.37 seconds, edged out by .05 seconds by Western State’s Nathan Dorzweiler.

Senior Kyle Harris and Clovis sophomore Jacob Jones also posted second-place finishes, Harris going 47-2 1/2 in triple jump and Jones running a 50.62 in the 400. In the 3,000 steeplechase, freshman Domenic Pacheco (11:23.38) and Tyson Jex (13:01.56) were second and third, while fourths were posted by Laine Fuller in the 800 (2:12.05) and Kennedy Baiywo in the 1,500 (4:20.68).

Leading the way for the ENMU women were freshmen Krystal Becenti, second in the 1,500 in 5:43.73, and Jerri Martin, second in the steeplechase in 14:19.16.

Another freshman, Theresa Chacon, came in third in the 1,500 in 6:16.96, while sophomores Hannah Rhoten (a season best 17-4 1/2) and Vanessa O’Neal of Clovis (17-0) went 3-4 in long jump.

Freshman Britney Stephens was fourth in the 100 in 12.53 and fifth in the 200 in 26.34, while junior Vyanca Vega claimed fourth in hammer throw at 121-2 3/4.

ENMU’s next outing is May 2 in the Lone star Conference championships, hosted by Abilene Christian.
